YouTube TV On Roku - Apple TV - XBOX, Android and Samsung, Sony and LG Smart TVs

The Wait is Over! YouTube TV announced their paid Live TV Channels Service which also includes their entire Ad Free YouTube Red video library is here or will be arriving shortly on all of todays most popular media streamers and smart TVs with a notable exception.

YouTube TV now on Roku, Apple TV and XBOX One

YouTube is one of the most popular video streaming sites and it has expanded its live TV channels service to many more potential subscribers.

With television viewers no longer dependent on cable TV or satellite for their daily shows, their subscribers have been cutting their subscriptions in record numbers. YouTube and others like Sling TV, Playstation Vue, DirecTV Now and several other have stepped in with live streaming TV packages of their own.

This has greatly increased the availability of Live TV streaming from the 3 choices we typically had in the past. Other options are now available as well and they offer thousands and thousands of on-demand TV shows and movies.

Giants like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Video are now also opting to pay for their own original programming, which has began to put a crunch on the large Networks who traditionally worked hand in hand with cable TV companies. Their ratings and profits have begun tanking as well. With the sheer numbers of people dumping their cable TV subscriptions in just the past year alone, it looks like there is no stopping it now.

Youtube A Giant Among Streaming TV Providers

In survey after survey, YouTube was ranked one of the top streaming TV services especially among younger audiences who typically don't pay for cable TV. At last count, YouTube has been delivering their content to 1.5 BILLION users a month worldwide.

With massive amounts of user generated and uploaded content, there is almost nothing you could learn by watching videos on YouTube. Their video library is huge, and videos from every subject exist on their platform. From the latest entertainment and music, movie trailers, comedy, and even full movies and TV shows, they can all easily be found on their free YouTube channel.

By launching their own Live TV service, YouTube already has access to a huge audience that is hungry for their content. What we don't know is how many subscribers signed up for their Live YouTube TV or ad-free Red YouTube services. They are not revealing this information. In the last year since their launch, YouTube TV has expanded to over 50 markets in the USA.

Their Live TV service now has 40 channels and costs $35/month and will be available on many more devices besides mobile devices which in the beginning had to cast their Live TV channels to watch it on TV. Two popular media streamers that will NOT be receiving the YouTube Live TV app are both the popular Fire TV or Fire Stick.

This is because Google is at war with Amazon because of their banning of Google Chromecast and Google voice products from their Amazon store. Amazon and Google both know that the future of Internet advertising will be in the living room. Both companies want to bombard you with ads, so you can shop right from your remote control or with your voice. The video ad market is expected to be a 70 Billion Dollar Annual Industry.

Another company that has followed the YouTube model is Roku. They are very similar to YouTube because like YouTube, almost all their content was created and uploaded by individual users. Video advertising will play a big part in determining if they can become profitable. With Roku now deeply embedded in a large segment of the media streamer and smart TV market, the future is looking sunny for Roku as well.

How The YouTube TV Streaming App Differs From the Mobile Version

If your used to the YouTube TV mobile version, you will be happy to learn the TV app still has all the same features and adds a few more features that makes it even better yet.

These include optimized voice commands specially programmed for TV. A nice full featured TV guide. A translucent zapper to quickly scroll through channels that pop up in the sidebar which makes finding and changing channels a breeze. Also new are smart recommendations, which are based on what time of the day or week you are watching.

The Good The Bad and The Ugly

Now that Nvidia SHIELD, Roku, Apple TV, and Smart TV users will have access to YouTube Live TV which includes their cloud based DVR, here is what you need to know.

The YouTube TV DVR records your live TV content into the cloud and your recordings will be retained for 9 months. Quality is quite good and the user interface is very nice as well. Since most people like to watch TV on their terms a DVR is a very valuable feature and not every live streaming TV service offers one.

One nice thing about a DVR is the ability to skip commercials. Live TV is loaded with commercials, YouTube has figured out a way to inject adds back into the recordings and not let you skip the ads after a couple of days. Some may find this annoying enough to choose another streaming TV service that does not do this to their subscribers.

Still No 60 FPS

YouTube's live TV streaming, while quite good, is still not as good as the HD you get from an antenna which is crystal clear and is 1080p HD. YouTube TV on the other hand only outputs 720P at 30 FPS. While the picture quality between 720p and 1080p is not drastically noticeable, at 30 FPS the live video content will show an occasional shudder.

With media streamers like the NVIDIA SHIELD, Apple TV and Roku which are all capable of playing content in 4K at 60 FPS. A streaming service that costs $35/month should be able to at least play YouTube at 60 FPS in 720p. Hopefully this will be an option at some point and like Netflix they may offer their users a settable stream quality function which could be adjusted in settings.
