VideoLAN is open source and Free to download. The developers offer frequent updates. For a free open source video player app, VLC is really quite stable, works excellent and offers tons of features.

VLC Supported File Formats or Codecs

VLC comes with almost every codec you will ever need already built in. If ever a new codec is needed, download and install the latest update and chances are you will be good to go. If not, be sure to check out this site and Download K-Lite Codec Pack Basic which has everything you need.
