AMAZON Is Secretly Working on Fire TV DVR
If the rumors are to be believed, Amazon is working on rolling out a new DVR device with onboard storage that could be connected to their Fire TV boxes and let users record live TV. This would give them the ability to pause, fast forward and rewind live TV.
Most importantly it would also give users a way to skip through the endless commercials on live TV seems to be plagued with.
The new device codenamed “Frank” is a Digital Video Recorder that could have the potential to compete directly with TiVo as was reported by Bloomberg which referred to an unnamed source that was privy to Amazon's plans.
This new DVR would also be able to connect wirelessly to Amazon’s Echo smart speakers and could also stream prior recorded shows over to smartphones and connected devices so you could watch them later.
There is no word yet on pricing information on Amazon's new DVR or if it would be an added perk to a Prime Subscription. Amazon has huge data servers, so storing this content would not be too much of a problem for the company. Possibly they may offer a limited amount of space for free and then let users upgrade for a fee if more storage space was needed.
We also don't know yet if Amazon’s DVR will let users record from both over-the-air channels and live TV content from its Amazon Channels and on-demand Prime Video service apps.
In a report released earlier this year, an Amazon exec claimed that their Fire TVs were out selling Roku in Europe and the rest of the world and also had more hours streamed.
Adding a DVR Function may be what Amazon needs to further increase market share and grab the coveted number one spot in streamer sales and hours streamed away from Roku.
Roku users for years have been wishing for a way to record live TV on their Roku boxes. This could spur Roku into developing DVR software and hardware of its own for their standalone media players and possibly integrate them into Roku TVs.
