Google Chromecast - A Different Way of Streaming

Chromecast is an HDMI dongle streamer that hides away nicely behind your TV and plugs directly into your HDTV along with a USB port for power. Unlike Roku and Apple TV, Chromecast does not yet come with very many channels or apps. It takes a different approach to media streaming by offering an AirPlay like user experience. What this means is it acts as a gateway to mirror or cast your content from a Smart Phone, Tablet or Computer and watch it on your TV screen. Chromecast uses these devices as it's remote control.

By using apps on your portable devices like Netflix, it will let you start or pause videos which will then play and stream through your WiFi Network. Once a video starts, you can turn off your portable device and they still continue to play on your TV.

Chromecast will also use the Google Chrome web browser to play any internet video or audio content directly on your TV. Unlike Apple's AirPlay, you can multi-task on your computer while doing so. Now playing a movie for a family member, while simultaneously checking your Facebook page is possible and easy with Chromecast.

CyangenMOD unlocks chromecast

Unleash Chromecast with CyanogenMod

"With Chromecast, you can easily enjoy your favorite online entertainment on your HDTV—movies, TV shows, music, and more from Netflix, YouTube, Google Play, and Chrome. Chromecast automatically updates to work with a growing number of apps."
"CyanogenMod is an aftermarket firmware for a number of cell phones based on the open-source Android operating system giving access all to all apps and media content."

Chromecast Approved Apps

Chromecast is dependent on apps that need to be approved or are on a white list before they can be used. Unfortunately, there are still not many approved apps available. Currently Google officially supports only the following apps for Chromecast: YouTube, Google Music, Netflix, and Google Play Movies and TV.
Available Apps are on our Chromecast Apps List with download links for Android and iTunes devices.

CyanogenMod to the Rescue

The Cyanogen custom firmware for select Android phones, allows any app that uses the Android Media Player, to stream video, or audio to your television thru Chromecast. It's super easy to use, just load the content you wish to cast to your TV and an option in the notification tray sends it on it's way. Learn more...

Many are saying Chromecast will dominate the media streaming market outselling today's current market leaders AppleTV and Roku. While it is yet too early to tell if this will happen, Chromecast will make it easier and more affordable then ever for more people to watch Netflix on their large screen TVs. By introducing many more people to Internet streaming, it makes Google's new Chromecast device a big plus for everyone, except maybe big Cable.
